Annual Conference 2022: The Welfare State Transformation and the Future Role of Paritarian Funds – Facing the impact of the pandemic, the changing labour market and the drive towards sustainability // 3rd November, 14h – 17h CET

  • Start: 03/11/2022 14:00
  • End: 03/11/2022 17:00

AEIP’s Annual Conference for 2022 aimed to bring together a wide range of experts from different policy fields, in order to discuss the crucial role of paritarian institutions of social protection in the transformation of the welfare models of the 21st century, which the European institutions are now addressing through important policy initiatives.

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the traditional welfare state models in Europe have been well under pressure to adapt to multiple new challenges stemming from long-term developments as the demographic trends in Europe and changing labour markets. The outbreak of the pandemic accelerated developments in some of the fields linked to the new world of work, including the increase of the non-standard forms of employment and the digitalization of services and teleworking, calling for deep reflection on how the European social protection systems could address such a transformation at multiple levels. The EC is responding to these transformations with several initiatives: the Action Plan for the European Pillar of Social Rights, the High-level Expert Group on the Future of the Welfare State, the EU Green & Social Taxonomies.

As paritarian social protection funds are long-term investors, the current debates focus on their important role as promoters and enablers for the much-needed green transition. Despite these factors, paritarian institutions have been also proven resilient throughout the crisis, maintaining the primary role as providers of benefits. Their collective representation function and governance model maintains the deep trust of members and beneficiaries, as it became even more evident that paritarian institutions offer stability and embedded good practices.

The discussions focused on the following topics:

Panel 1: Transformation of the welfare state and the role of paritarian institutions

Panel 2: Constructing a robust EU Social Taxonomy: the importance of the ‘S’ in ESG and the role of paritarian funds
